Building Site Memories

Below you will find a collection of memories about the location where our building will stand. Over the years the building has been a staple in the Pleasantville community. It has undergone many changes and renovations, endured fires and damage, and has been owned by many different people. Each owner and each era brought with it memories and moments that marked a time in Pleasantville’s history. Below you’ll find a collection of those memories and photos submitted by community members. We are honored to take part in a long legacy of service to the Pleasantville Community that has existed in this building footprint! Learn more about our project here.

If you would like to submit a memory to be added to this collection, you can email us at info@pvilleyi.org

Lea Williams:

I remember getting out of school at east elementary and walking to the grocery store and seeking out my grandpa Irving for a fresh slice of baloney. He and uncle Blackie always spoiled us grandkids with baloney, a piece of candy from the huge candy section, and my favorite comic books. I remember the big cooler. Also, Lois Burns and Jody Collins working at the register' back then . There were little boxes at the registers that people could “charge it” and they would add the receipts to the little box under their names. It was so fun having your grandparents own a grocery store!

Margie Gilderbloom Mix

I remember growing up Grandma Annie always had a lady dressed up as Aunt Jemima down to promote Aunt Jemima pancake mix.  She was from Des Moines.  The store is where I learned to play pitch.  What a group that was that played cards. My dad made ring bologna at one time and it was sooooo good.  So many memories it’s hard to see the building gone.
